Veterans' Exemptions

Disabled Veterans Exemption (For Adaptive housing) - 35 ILCS 200/15-165

To Qualify:

-

Property must be owner occupied by the disabled veteran, the disabled veteran’s spouse, or the surviving unmarried spouse of the disabled veteran as of January 1st of the eligibility year.

Property must be a residential single family home, townhome, or condominium.

Owner/occupant must be a disabled veteran who has served in the Armed Forces of the United States and who has acquired, in connection with that service, a disability of such a nature that the Federal Government has authorized payment for purchase or construction of specially adapted housing as set forth in the U.S. CODE TITLE 38, Chapter 21.

You will not be eligible if you are claiming exemption under the Disabled Persons Homestead Exemption or the Disabled Veterans Standard Homestead Exemption.

     

Documents Needed:

 

Certification from the Illinois Department of Veterans Affairs.


 

 

Process:

 

File a copy of certification on an annual basis with the Supervisor of Assessments Office.


 

 

Effect:

 

The Disabled Veterans Exemption exempts up to $100,000 from your property’s assessed valuation each year.

Returning Veterans Homestead Exemption - 35 ILCS 200/15-167

To Qualify:

-

 Must be an Illinois resident who has served as a member of the U.S. Armed Forces, Illinois National Guard, or U.S. Reserve Forces and returned from active duty in an armed conflict involving the armed forces of the U.S.


-

Must own or lease and occupy the property as a primary residence and be liable for paying the property taxes.


-

Property must be a residential single family home, townhome, or condominium.

     

Documents Needed:

-

Proof of ownership of the property (recorded deed, title policy, etc.).

If discharged from active duty service, provide original Department of Defense DD Form 214 or a copy certified by the County Recorder of Deeds or Illinois Department of Veterans Affairs or National Archives Record Center.

If still on active duty after returning home, provide ONE of the following: 

 

 

  • DD220.
  • Military orders and travel voucher that shows date of return from an armed conflict within the assessment year.
  • If you do not have the above, provide a letter from Unit Commander or Unit Personnel Office as proof of active duty.


 

 

Process:

 

File all documents along with the application with DuPage County Supervisor of Assessments. Application forms may be obtained from that office or online at www.dupageco.org/SOA.

 


 

 

Effect:

 

The Returning Veterans Homestead Exemption provides a one-year only $5,000 exemption off the total assessed valuation in the taxable year that the veteran returns.

Disabled Veterans Standard Homestead Exemption - 35 ILCS 200/15-169

To Qualify:

-

Property must be owner-occupied by the disabled veteran or the surviving unmarried spouse of the disabled veteran as of January 1st of eligibility year, and the property market value must not be more than $750,000.


-

Must be an Illinois resident who is a veteran with at least a 30% service-connected disability as certified by U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.


-

Property must be a residential single family home, townhome, or condominium.


-

You will not be eligible if you are claiming exemption under the Disabled Persons Homestead Exemption or the Disabled Veterans Exemption.

     

Documents Needed:

-

Proof of ownership of the property (recorded deed, title policy, etc.).

Application form PTAX-342 fully completed.

 

-

Provide one of the following:

  • Form DD214 or a copy or Certification of Military Service Form.
  • Disability Certification Letter from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs for current assessment year.
  • Surviving spouse will need to provide the disabled veteran’s marriage and death certificates and proof of ownership.


 

 

Process:

 

File all documents and application with Dupage County Supervisor of Assessments Office. The application form may be obtained from that office or online at www.dupageco.org/SOA.

 


 

 

Effect:

 

The Disabled Veterans Standard Homestead Exemption provides and annual exemption of: 

  • Up to a maximum of $250,000 off the total assessed value - if disability is 70% or more.
  • $5,000 off the total assessed value – if disability is 50% to 69%.
  • $2,500 off the total assessed value – if disability is 30% to 49%.
